I love when people say stupid things like, “I’m pregnant so I need to eat more,” or “It’s ok.  It’s organic.”  By love I mean, I want to face palm them in their own face.  Another golden statement: “I don’t eat past 9pm because it makes you gain weight.”

LOOK AT ME WHEN I SAY THIS:

Stop reading whatever is put in front of you as truth.

Research is inconclusive on this topic, so much so that researchers are uncomfortable stating what the implications of the results really mean.  Calories are calories, no matter when you ingest them.  The key is that you burn off what you intake; that will maintain your weight (assuming no underlying medical conditions are playing a part).

And no, just being fat doesn’t count as a medical condition.

It is true that people tend to eat late night foods that are fattier, greasier and overall unhealthy.  Also, depending on your metabolic cycle, your digestion could slow as night-time approaches.  However, you can not convince me that if someone eats a healthy diet overall, then decides to have an apple and oatmeal at midnight that they are at risk for obesity.  Heck, you could probably eat an entire bag of chips at midnight as long as you’re burning it off at an equal rate later on.

My real qualm here is the lack of accountability.  People will take a small piece of information and attach themselves to it as justification for their life choices.  Even people with hypothyroidism, who legitimately have a metabolism issue, are not as fat as many Americans who simply have an eating problem.  The problem is you.  The problem is your choices, your lack of self discipline, your inability to sacrifice immediate gratification, your insecurity.

The ultimate pain for humanity is the eternal struggle against our own feelings of inadequacy.

From this struggle comes all forms of coping: alcoholism, people who can’t say no, drug abuse, violence, obesity, womanizers, smoking, drama queens, overly sensitive cry babies, cheaters, people pleasers, ball busters, suspiciously nice people, ass holes.  You name it.  We’re all guilty of tactics that allow us to distract from the aversion we feel toward our own inadequacies.

So snap out of it.  Take some responsibility.  Take charge of your life and stop using flippant articles from health.com to justify your life condition.  Take over for me, Nicole:
